Catch them FAST!

Have u guys ever seen a Cola-Cola ad on a Pepsi bottle. Or even imagined a day when this might happen? I don’t think that’s possible. But this is close. Every time you open a Google page from Microsoft’s Internet Explorer web browser, you see a box in the top right hand corner proclaiming, “A faster way to browse the net – Google Chrome!” Height of Ambush Marketing and amazingly it all makes perfect sense!

Out of the crowd

Well, let me begin this one with a seemingly innocuous question. “What all do you expect to get at a roadside chae tapir?” Well, apart from tea and/or coffee that is. Cigarettes, pan, pan masala, other tobacco related products and toffees may be common answers. You can also expect home-made biscuits, maybe some branded biscuits, chips & other snacks and cold-drinks may be other answers. But Wedding Cards?! Well, I would never have thought about it! But the owner of this store surely did and this is the display in front of his store! What an unique product offering. In a metropolitan like Mumbai where such roadside tea-stalls abound, what a way to differentiate yourself from the "rabble". Way to go!

Atlas shrugged!

It is popular knowledge that competition benefits the customer. And cut-throat competition even more so! And today, few sectors are as competitive as the banking sector. The degree of competition is evident from the fact that public sector banks, best were known for their devil-may-care attitude towards customers, are today trying to woo customers by any means possible. And an example of the same is this board seen at a State Bank of India branch in Kolkata. It tells customers how fast the bank can service them and tries to change the popular perception that pubic banks are places where things are done at snail-pace with employees taking their own sweet time to do things as and when they fancy! Well, a note-worthy initiative. Hope they live up to their lofty claims!

Co-branding hits the road!

I started off posting in this blog with an example of same brand co-branding. Well, co-branding seems to be the rage of the year with most brands going for co-branding, be it a product, an event or, in this case, a popular Television show! MTV Hero-Honda Roadies is one of the most popular Television show for the youth. A measure of its popularity can be seen from the thousands who turn up for auditions at every one of the six cities, every year! And the sky high TRP ratings! So it is but obvious that co-branding with roadies is an instant means of reaching millions. And Hero Honda, Ceat, Mountain Dew and some others have done just that, cashing in on the popularity of this teen heart-throb! Well, Roadies is also not to be left out. Apart from raking in millions of rupees, it has chosen brands who co-endorse with it carefully, keeping the youth connect in mind. Kudos to the Roadies team!

e-Bead

Once while I was travelling by a Best bus from Chembur to Vashi, I saw a young lady wearing a small yellow box like a ring on her index finger. The box had two buttons, one large and one small and a small display. She was merrily clicking away and I was wondering, “Ye ho kya raha hai!” Curiosity got the better of me and I asked her as to what the thing was.

The answer was very simple. We have seen people with long beads which they use to keep count as they mentally narrate some holy name or incantation. Well, this was an electronic bead! Every click was one round of the incantation like moving one bead. The display shows the count and the small button was the reset button!

Marketers are known for spotting unique market gaps (an area where there is an unfulfilled need) and exploiting them to make profit while at the same time satisfying the needs of people. Well, this was one such stroke of genius. Hats off to the person who came up with the idea!
